PDX Contemporary Art is delighted to present Near and Far Afield, an exhibition of new paintings by Tennessee-based artist Nick Blosser.
Nick Blosser has been exhibiting in Portland for nearly 30 years, first at the legendary Jamison Thomas and then continuing on with PDX Contemporary Art. A native of Ohio, Blosser was well aware and influenced by Charles Burchfield’s artwork and philosophy. Blosser’s quiet, careful observation of the magic of nature—its patterns, forms, colors—found a natural and appreciative audience in the Pacific Northwest.
Working primarily in egg tempera and watercolor, Blosser paints from small study drawings that he creates while out in the woods and fields. Blosser is drawn to incidents in nature that others may not notice. Through these seemingly ordinary moments, the paintings capture the quivering aliveness of nature. The more time spent with a Blosser painting, the greater the rewards as one notices the many subtleties of shading and the abstract compositions made by the trees, branches, brambles, hills, and sky.
Nick Blosser is recipient of the Rome Prize and has been awarded two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the Ohio Arts Council. Blosser has been exhibiting since the 1980s and has shows at PDX Contemporary Art (Portland, OR), Ortlip Gallery at Houghton University (Houghton, NY), Milligan College Art Gallery (Milligan College, TN), Art in Embassies (Libreville, Gabon), Adam Baumgold Gallery (New York, NY), J.G. Contemporary (New York, NY), Carroll Reece Museum (Johnson City, TN), Sun Valley Art Center (Sun Valley, ID), Houghton College Art Gallery (Houghton, NY), Jamison Thomas Gallery (Portland, OR), Rudolph Poissent Gallery (Houston, TX), and The American Academy in Rome (Rome, Italy), among others.
