"It's not personal, it's business" is a widespread fallacy. A misunderstood quote and concept preventing constructive business to occur. To actively ignore the human element, companies deny themselves the mastery to persuade. As of now, business is still run by human beings. For operations and processes to be applied and function smoothly, the insertion of the human element is fundamental. An example pertaining to understanding and implementing a strategy would be to remind your team to adopt a 3-step approach. Convincing them that this technique has a high probability of general success given our upbringing. As children, our parents would countdown "1, 2, 3" before we executed a command. Whether it is to jump off a couch, dip our heads in a pool, or open our mouths for the spoon. The 3-step or 3-count method is embedded in our nature. How then can you deny that business isn't personal?
My assumption is that the sentiment they wish to express is along the lines of "let's not make it personal." That there is an agreement of the game they are playing. A non-verbalized understanding of the rules, notably the highly prioritized one. Whereby profit preceeds the feelings of those who are instructed to not make business personal. After all, "greed is good" is a mantra most individuals cite to legitimize the practice of profit over people. The lure to be profitable is insatiable. It can be addictive since it elevates societal status, purchases unrequited comforts, offers the luxury of giving, the illusion of freedom, and access.
Being denied is inhumane. Especially if your morals, ethics, values, and beliefs foster goodness. That you don't want to disrupt with chaos, damage for sport, corrupt through cruelty, and whatever else is considered destructive behavior in society. If people align with you, then there's no reason to exclude. But given the limited capitalism we experience, division is necessary, and based on the divide, the economic climate is personal.
Let's take how we are treated personally and not let us be consumed and attached by the inhumane nature of business. By that, I mean, let's not make it personal by getting carried away with the emotional feeling. Constant self-reminding of the identity of the business landscape will help lessen the intensity of the emotion. Eventually this detachment will help you manage your communication, mindset, and productivity. Clearer communication leads to a healthier mindset and efficient productivity.
Be not mistaken, there will be forces who want to drag you to play in their playground of chaos. To test and see if your personal values are for sale. Given that there is a mindset of "everything has a price." If you set a price, you will be owned by someone who will reserve the right to strip you of what you value the most. Effectively exercising the economics of eliminating the personal.
And now you are faced with choices. To be bought, to refuse being purchased, and to go above and beyond the present landscape. To fight for the preservation of your humanity. This sentiment reminds me of a poem I composed on the day of the terrorist attack on Lebanese soil on September 17th, 2024:
"Waking from foreign dreams, the morning invites the earth to peace. A difficulty to accept for the ones who were targeted by cowardice. A chaos nestling on their sensitive skin. All the memories of sadness flood. Thinking of those who were robbed to walk beside us. Our pace halted from this pathetic place. Where the demonic thrive in draining the goodness from our spirit. All the more reason to celebrate and commemorate your birth. Whenever it may land on a calendar. Let us rejoice in your survival. Your continued fight against foes that wish to suffocate you with carnage. All of us who champion you will take your hand and leap. Fall to find and guide you out of the abyss. Lead you to truth and follow you throughout your life."
Once we lose the will to fight, motion is stunted. The sinking feeling is spiritual and unrelenting. It's a sensation that cultivates the question, What am I doing?" Please find a way immediately to answer it and join the fight to reclaim our humanity. It's the proper business practice of the soul.
