On view in the Paris gallery from 16 May-14 September, Carpenters Workshop Gallery presents Summer by design, an exhibition of historical and contemporary works that are united by the aesthetics of summer.

Recalling the soft glow of a sunset, Aki+Arnaud Cooren’s Ishigaki lamp #17 dune (2023) is inspired by Arnaud’s free diving experiences off the coast of Ishigaki island, south of Japan. The light of the piece is projected upwards, producing a mesmerising shadow above that compliments Nacho Carbonell’s Growing glass 1, with its organic glass canopy welded onto a metal trunk, emiting a warming light.

The lightness of the season is illustrated through clean lines, sharp palettes and an abundance of natural materials. Vincenzo De Cotiis’s DC1727 (2017) wall cabinet is iridescent, akin to the fossilised nature of the earth. DC1742 (2017) dining table is composed of Murano glass, German silver, white cast bronze and smoked glass, while the oyster marble tabletop is processed to emphasise the stone’s inner workings. Over six metres long, DC1742 is an incredible technical achievement considering the weight of the stone and is supported by playfully curved legs that bend in on themselves. Batten and Kamp’s Titan lounger chair – ash (2023) directly references the trappings of a well spent summer. Crafted from recycled acrylic and ebano nero marble, the piece is rooted in the designers’ core memories of growing up in the landscapes of New Zealand and the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong.
