The “September Reset” is a real thing. We are hardwired to see July as the end of a cycle, August as a reflection period, and September as the start of something new and exciting.
But, and this is a big “but," how do you do this right? Good question. At the end of July, celebrate your wins. August journal and really reflect on what went well and what habits held you back.
Now it’s September, and your back to the grind. So how do you do this? Well, goal-setting is the key. What is the character you want to be in your own life movie?
In my practice as a coach for successful men, I’ve seen how goal setting can be a powerful tool for transforming lives. Whether you’re aiming to advance in your career, improve your health, or enhance your personal life, effective goal setting is the key to turning your aspirations into reality. Today, I’m excited to share some of the strategies I use with my clients to help them set and achieve meaningful goals.
The first step in the goal-setting process is reflection. It’s about taking stock of your current situation, identifying your strengths, and recognizing areas for growth. This self-awareness forms the foundation of successful goal-setting. By understanding where you are now, you can begin to define where you want to go.
Once you’ve reflected on your current situation, the next step is to define your vision. What do you truly want to achieve? This vision should be both inspiring and aligned with your core values. For many of my clients, this vision involves not just professional success but also a balanced and fulfilling personal life. Whether it’s securing a promotion, improving your fitness, or dedicating more time to your family, having a clear vision is crucial.
With a clear vision in mind, the next step is to break it down into SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. SMART goals provide clarity and a roadmap to success. For example, instead of setting a vague goal like "I want to be healthier," a SMART goal might be "I will run three times a week and reduce sugar intake by 50% over the next two months." This approach makes it easier to track progress and stay motivated.
Another essential part of goal setting is identifying high-impact activities. These are the tasks that will have the greatest impact on your success. For instance, if your goal is to advance in your career, high-impact activities might include networking with industry leaders, taking on challenging projects, or pursuing further education. By focusing on these critical activities, you can make significant progress toward your goals while efficiently using your time and energy.
An action plan is crucial for turning your goals into reality. This plan breaks down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks, each with a specific deadline. It’s important to schedule these tasks into your calendar to ensure consistent progress. In my practice, I emphasize the importance of staying organized and disciplined in executing your action plan.
Monitoring your progress regularly is vital. I encourage my clients to set aside time each week to review their goals, assess what’s working, and make necessary adjustments. Celebrating small victories along the way is also important, as it helps maintain motivation and momentum.
Accountability is a key factor in achieving your goals. Sharing your goals with someone who can hold you accountable—whether it’s a friend, mentor, or coach—can make a significant difference. In my role as a coach, I work closely with my clients to provide this accountability, ensuring they stay on track even when challenges arise.
Flexibility is another important aspect of the goal-setting process. Life is unpredictable, and your goals may need to evolve as circumstances change. Being open to adjusting your goals ensures that you remain aligned with your long-term vision, even when the path to success takes unexpected turns.
Finally, taking action is where real progress happens. Goals are meaningless without action. I encourage my clients to start implementing their action plans immediately—don’t wait for the perfect time. As the saying goes, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now." This proactive approach is essential for turning your goals into achievements.
In my practice, I believe in the power of goal-setting to unlock your full potential.
