GR Gallery is pleased to announce Midsommar dance, a vibrant group exhibition featuring over 40 new artworks by a diverse roster of 20 innovative artists from around the globe. Starting August 1st, each artist will contribute their unique vision and artistic approach to the exhibition, resulting in a rich diversity of styles, media, and cultural perspectives. The varied backgrounds of the artists showcase the vast range of human creativity.
Midsommar dance presents an array of works ranging from minimal abstract compositions to hyper-realistic figurative pieces, and from dadaist paper collages to offbeat ceramic sculptures. These works aim to explore and illuminate the human condition while celebrating creativity.
The exhibition draws its inspiration from the acclaimed movie Midsommar, renowned for its vivid portrayal of a surreal and unsettling festival that blends folklore with contemporary psychological horror. Midsommar dance taps into these rich themes, using art to explore complex and enduring questions about the human experience. Themes such as the interplay between darkness and light, the cyclical nature of life and death, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world are examined through the diverse perspectives of the participating artists.
Despite these profound themes, the exhibition maintains an exuberant and playful tone, inviting viewers to engage with the art in a way that is both thought-provoking and gratifying.
In the project room, we will present Alienated, a solo exhibition of five new paintings by the artist Drin. Drin’s work delves deeply into enigmatic questions, drawing inspiration from both the inner self and the surrounding environment. These pieces invite viewers on a journey into the subconscious, exploring themes of identity, memory, and perception. The artworks in this dedicated space are designed to provoke introspection and contemplation.
Fran Baena (b. 1999, Priego de Cordoba, Spain) tries to establish a link with the adolescents of today and the dire tomorrow. His painting is particularly linked to the post-internet world, highlighting the poetic politics that implicate painting and the images consumed on the web. Paying special attention to the irony currently used to laugh at our misfortunes as a last resort, he does this through the analysis of sad and cynical memes and songs.
Born in 1990, on the North Island of New Zealand, Brad Donovan grew up as a keen illustrator and exhibited a natural talent for the arts. While retaining aspects of his established artistic style, Brad Donovan has embarked into the exploration of new creative realms. This journey delves into themes of doubt and the intricacies of decision making.
DRIN is a contemporary visual artist born on March 16, 2000 based in Manila, Philippines. He studied Fine Arts student majoring Painting at the University of the East Caloocan. His works are a mix of illustration and pop surrealism, often depicting nostalgia and memories drawn from Drin’s personal experiences. His signature style involves the use of childlike characters in his paintings that have become a hallmark of his work.
Nicole Gordon lives in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her paintings weave together elements of childlike innocence with darker undertones, a dynamic that echoes the makeup of human existence. The narratives function as dreamscapes that juxtapose the observed.
Born in 1986 Surabaya, Indonesia. In Juju artworks, the macaques or another animal scream their social status through the intensity of the colour on their faces or body, crowning them as the closest cousin of mankind who are similarly noisy, craving for acknowledgement, territorial, and in constant struggle – if not physical then spiritual.
Nicholas Koshkosh (born in 1985 in Mariupol, Ukraine) active in Russia, has gained international recognition for his colorful paintings. He has found his own unique way to imprint various ancient symbols and creatures into his practice. His aesthetic language spans a multitude of references to biblical tales and mythical stories. The ancient narratives are combined with cultural signs from the Slavic regions, Western symbolism, and elements from contemporary mass culture.
Luca Lombardi (born in 1996 in Brescia, Italy) first specialized in Art Graphics, later in the year of 1996 he graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. Throughout his journey, Luca Lombardi has always been captiated by vector shapes, and how they can be transformed in relation to color. often inspired by the “new” chromatic luminescences provided by the digital universe.
Angel Lovecraft (born in 1998, in Buffalo, NY) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Angel moved to Brooklyn, NY in 2017, to attain a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute. Angel’s recent workis steeped in nostalgia, a tribute to the world he grew up in during the early 2000s, and an effort to reconcile the present with memories of the past.
Mutto Matto is a self-taught artist, born in Russia in 1986. As Mutto Matto’s artistic voice evolved, she became drawn to figurative art. Her paintings evoke feelings of strangeness and intrigue, humor and anxiety, prompting viewers to contemplate their meaning and symbolism.
16Mei born in 1995, Japan, is a self-taught artist who worked primarily with transperent watercolor. In 2021, 16Mei held his first solo exhibition at Art Gallery Shirokane 6c. Since 2022, the artist has been painting with acrylics on canvas and exhibiting work in international art fairs. 16Mei draws inspiration from his chilhood fears of nature, lucid dreams and deep water.
Lap Oluwaseyi Abu, born in 1995 in Akure and raised in Ondo State, Nigeria, is a self-taught young contemporary artist with a passion for drawing and painting that has been present from an early age.His recent body of works Explore Theme of Love, passion, vulnerability, honest, abandonment and therapeutic healing process following the grieving of his father loss.
Born in 1996, Hyeon O is a Korean artist who currently lives and works in Seoul. In 2020 he graduated with his BFA in Fine Arts from the Sejong University. Ever since, Hyeon has been actively participating in international group exhibitions. In his works, Hyeon explores the topic of the purpose of life in the fog of solitude and loneliness.
Saxon JJ Quinn (Australian,1986) creates work that is a mix of personal expression, reference, inspiration and mood – Nostalgic references scatter across his canvas and ceramic works along with figures that pay homage to the COBRA movement, past masters like K. Appel, A. Jorn, S, Vandercam, P. Alechinsky among others.
Salome Rigvava, origionally from Georgia, currently works and lives in New York (b. 1988, Gagra, Abkhazia, Georgia), graduated MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Salome Rigvava uses fairytale motifs in her paintings because fairytales are imbued with unconscious desires, passions, and aspirations. There are hidden taboo topics that we don’t realize as children, but can over time change in appearance and gradually come to the surface.
Yuya Saito (born in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating from the University of Central Oklahoma in the United States, through his life across Japan and the United States, he presents the artwork on the theme of relation between human being and the city. Taking the opportunity of skateboarding, which he started at the age of 14, Saito created works with the theme of “Relationship between cities and humans.”
In his works Marius Seidlitz (Germany, 1985) (addresses the complexity of the claims to the self. What is beauty? Is there perfection? How much is the denial of the unmistakable I to find any recognition? His expressive images often spring from diverse women’s bodies that are deliberately imperfect.
Born in 1995 in France, Camille Theodet did first Fine Art studies (bachelor) before entering a private school of Special effects makeup. Camille is working on different compositions, mixing genres and ideas, to create a fragmented picture that can be read as a whole narration. His work is an attempt to deconstruct a feeling, an action, by confronting subjects, focusing on a single moment.
Tokita Misuzu, born in 1982 Osaka, Japan, currently lives and works in Tokyo. In her artworks, Tokita brings attention to the vulnarebility of animals in the face of current global urbanization. Animals utilize a human gaze upon a viewer to communicate their message of defeat through their eyes.
Johan Wahlstrom, Born 1959 in Stockholm, Sweden Johan Wahlstrom’s work focuses on the human condition and political landscape, especially in the context of this difficult and interesting moment in history through which we are all living.
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1974 Akiko Yamaguchi graduated Tokyo University of the Arts, School of Fine Art, Major in Japanese painting, Salon de printemps Award. Akiko Yamaguchi creates works based on the concept which is related to human memory and the connection to others through it. In her work, the stories that have been woven by various memories are expressed. My paintings will resonate with viewers’ memories when my works touch their heart.
Miranda Yokota (born in Saitama, Japan in 1995) majored in Oriental history at Chuo University. Miranda Yokota is a Japanese artist based in Tokyo. Miranda’s cross-cultural mix in her paintings was created from her nostalgic memories of home. Divided between Sri Lanka and Japan, she tries to combine both worlds. Heavily inspired by DVD covers and Sri Lankan snacks, Miranda guides the viewer back to her childhood.
