Considered one of history’s most important inventions, human beings have been making paper—and art on paper—for nearly two thousand years. Originally used in Western art as a preliminary step in planning and preparing illuminated manuscripts, over the intervening millennium, works on paper have developed into a genre worthy of serious consideration and appreciation. Acknowledging the subsidiary role to which these works have often been relegated when compared to painting or sculpture, Works on Paper celebrates the broad medium as an essential vehicle for artistic and cultural expression in contemporary art. The exhibition surveys a variety of works on paper from twentieth and twenty-first-century movements—including George Condo’s cubist figures and a set of screenprints by Baldessari—all to recognize the significance of paper as a critical mediatic category in contemporary art.
