If there’s a heaven for me, I’m sure it has a beach attached.
(Jimmy Buffett)
It’s just a deal in life that happens and you don’t have any control over it. Maybe if I was a little older I would’ve handled it better, but I wasn’t, and I didn’t.
(Calvin Parker)
Synchronicity is an interesting concept, and it can be downright spooky when you see it at work. Friday, September 1st, 2023, I went with my podcast co-hosts and a few other friends to downtown Greensboro, North Carolina to meet at Natty Greene’s, do a fantasy football draft, and play some bar shuffleboard. On the drive back that night, A Pirate Looks at 40 by Jimmy Buffett came strumming out of the radio. We talked at length about the man and his music, his books, his concerts, and our admiration for the lifestyle he stood for.
Jimmy Buffett (1946 – 2023), born: Pascagoula, Mississippi
Jimmy Buffett was a renowned American musician, singer-songwriter, author, and businessman who left an indelible mark on popular culture. Born on December 25, 1946, in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffett is best known for his laid-back, tropical-infused music, often referred to as "Gulf and Western" or "Trop Rock." His signature songs, including "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise," epitomized his carefree and escapist lifestyle philosophy, which celebrated relaxation, beach life, and the pursuit of leisure. Beyond his music career, Jimmy Buffett authored several books, ventured into the restaurant business with his Margaritaville restaurant chain, and even dabbled in acting. His devoted fan base, known as "Parrotheads," will continue to embrace his music and lifestyle, cementing his status as a cultural icon associated with an endless summer vibe.
Calvin Parker (1954 – 2023), abducted by a UFO: Pascagoula, Mississippi
Calvin Parker was an American author and a notable figure in the realm of UFO and extraterrestrial encounters. He gained widespread recognition due to his involvement in the Pascagoula UFO incident, which occurred in 1973 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Alongside his friend Charles Hickson, Parker claimed to have been abducted by unidentified beings while they were fishing on the Pascagoula River. Their account of the incident garnered significant media attention and has remained a prominent case in UFO folklore. Calvin Parker wrote a book detailing his experiences and continued to share his perspective on the encounter, contributing to the ongoing debate surrounding the existence of extraterrestrial life and close encounters with UFOs.
A sad weekend
Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, I awoke to sad news when I discovered that both Jimmy Buffett and Calvin Parker had passed away. Along with Smitty Neaves, one of my podcast co-hosts, I was born and raised in Mississippi. Both men hold legendary status, although, admittedly, for very different reasons. Not only had I been engaged in a lengthy conversation about Jimmy Buffett the night before with Smitty and our other podcast co-host CJ Dearinger, but our podcast has always been inextricably linked to Calvin Parker. Our first ever interview was with a man who went only by Mr. Billy, who was a witness to one of the most documented UFO encounters ever in Flora, Mississippi, not far from Pascagoula. Mr. Billy knew of the Calvin Parker incident, had kept up with it, and we discussed it with him.
Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, we had a podcast scheduled to discuss shocking findings from an aviation expert’s analysis of mysterious UFO videos from 2014 that are said to be linked to the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370. That podcast was affected by another death, which will remain private for this writing, but we could all feel the ebb and flow of synchronicity swirling around us.
Conclusion
Synchronicity is a fascinating and enigmatic concept that challenges our understanding of the interconnectedness of events and the nature of reality itself. Whether viewed as mere coincidence or as a meaningful sign from the universe, synchronicity invites us to contemplate the mysterious ways in which our lives are intertwined with the world around us. Smitty and me growing up in Mississippi, just North of Pascagoula, Mississippi, birthplace of Jimmy Buffett, one our musical heroes, and the abduction zone of Calvin Parker, a UFOlogy legend. We are sad beyond words that we never got to meet either.
It reminds us that the universe is infinite, but life as we know it is short. This can be a frightening and overwhelming concept that leaves us feeling tiny and insignificant. It can make us ponder if life has any real meaning for us at all. Yet, there may be more to the unfolding of events than meets the eye, and sometimes, when we pay attention to the subtle patterns and coincidences that emerge, we find a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in our journey through life. Synchronicity encourages us to remain open to the mysteries of existence, fostering a sense of wonder and curiosity that can lead to greater insights and a richer appreciation of the intricacies of the universe. It can also make us realize that sometimes, all we really need is a day at the beach.
I want to go back, to the islands
Where the shrimp boats are tied up to the piling
Give me oysters and beer
For dinner every day of the year
And I'll feel fine... I'll feel fine(Jimmy Buffett, Tin Cup Chalice)
