Seizan Gallery New York is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring seven oil paintings by Yasushi Ikejiri. The paintings are the newest addition to Ikejiri’s on-going “candy wrapper” series. The show opens June 15th and is on view through July 29 in the project space of the newly opened Seizan Gallery New York.
Influenced by a variety of landscape painters, from Ivan Shishikin to Edward Hopper, Ikejiri explores mundane scenes of everyday life in Tokyo. He depicts these images in oil with extraordinary detail and saturated color. While they appear quiet and tranquil, a dystopian undercurrent prevails.
In recent years Ikejiri has produced works inspired by the classic children's story The Chocolate Candy Angel by Mimei Ogawa (1882-1961). Each painting depicts the corner of a desolate street or park with a mysteriously placed empty candy box or crumpled snack wrappers. These enigmatic hints of human life in an otherwise empty landscape speak to the viewer’s imagination.
Yasushi Ikejiri was born in Hokkaido in 1971, studied painting at the Toyo Institute of Art and Design, and now lives and works in Tokyo. Ikejiri's work has been included in a number of exhibitions in the US and in Japan. After the successful solo exhibition Here, There in Seizan Gallery New York in 2021, his works have been featured at SCOPE Miami and VOLTA New York.
