A conversation with Trevor Jones led us to discover that I was shutting the gallery for 6 weeks and that he had a studio he wanted to clear out of paintings and drawings. This led to an exhibition which is exclusive in two senses, one being that the gallery will only be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. As an extra bonus Trevor has agreed to discount his paintings so this is a good time to grab a bargain.
Originally from Canada, Trevor Jones set out in 1996 with a backpack and an appetite for adventure. Three years and four continents later he arrived in Scotland, fell in love with it, and decided to stay. Graduating in 2008 with distinction from Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art with an MA (Hons) Fine Art in Drawing and Painting, he now manages his time between his studio, working for the charity Art in Healthcare and teaching at Leith School of Art.
Jones paints with a remarkable awareness and sincerity, layering ‘sensations’, which are built up with paint and various other media as he responds intuitively to the world around him. Working in a unique, free-flowing manner, incorporating rhythms and patterns, text and textures, his paintings evolve until the essence of the subject matter contemplated reveals itself. Both challenging and rewarding, each piece is approached individually yet a powerful coherency threads its way through his very distinctive style.
"Trevor Jones is an exciting, young artist who is making his own distinctive contribution to abstract painting in Scotland." - Bill Hare, Art Historian (Honorary Teaching Fellow and Curator of Edinburgh University’s Fine Art Collection)
