Like his suits, the elegance and finesse of Patrick Hellmann’s Mayfair store is all in the details. Sure, it stands regally on St James’ St, in the good company of Dunhill and Berry Bros, but tucked in between its black and silver Art Deco shelves and polished mirrors you’ll find chic little touches: tiny Picasso prints, books of Paul Himmel’s photography, a pair of ladies’ court shoes. Patrick Hellmann insists that good style is in his blood. ‘The Patrick Hellmann label represents a culture where the savoir faire of tailoring and architecture is passed on within the family. It is a must to satisfy the customer’s requirements even in the smallest of details – til absolute sophistication is achieved,’ he explains.

German-born, Patrick honed his career in the fashion industry for twenty years before launching his own collection and following this his first store in Berlin. ‘, It is my love for my work and the dream of creating something that have spurred me on to becoming a designer. In my endeavour to achieve elegance lies the strength to turn my ambition into success.’ Since its beginnings, the Patrick Hellmann label has become a staple menswear brand for connoisseurs around the globe – to whom the luxe feel of the tailoring is as appealing as the distinctive quirks that make the garments stand out; a leather collar flash, a mink lining, a subtle skull print on a silk scarf…

Patrick’s trademark colour is purple, and the menswear collection includes cashmere sweaters, shirts and ties in this hue. ‘Violet is my colour; deep like the gardens of La Mamounia (Marrakesh) of my childhood. One can often see it as an anchor point in my collections,’ he expounds. But Patrick Hellmann does not just stop at sartorial menswear. His ventures into interior design has led him to create beautiful furniture and homewares – as well as creating breath-taking yet distinctive spaces.

Of his inspirations, Patrick describes ‘,I love to bring back vivid details from my numerous journeys, so that I can process them to create something...To turn them into the essentials of the “Art deco” and to redesign them for the present times, for a comfort and functionality that are indisputable. The elegance, the style, the refinement, the attitude – these are the inspiring fortes of my creative, empty side. The ambience of a place, the soft touch of some objects or materials having a rich soul – full of life and potential…’

It seems he takes great pains to ensure precision and extravagance in the design – choosing to work with established luxury brands to create something unique. He recently collaborated with Lalique on a collection of glassware, including vases in purple crystal. Elton John apparently snapped one up. He also designed a decanter set for vodka, working with the prestigious Saint Louis glassmakers and Audi even produced a limited edition car with Patrick Hellmann detailing. What does 2014 bring for this revered designer? ‘2014 will be a particularly evolutionary year, focussing on the development of a product line for women. The men’s collection would showcase innovations that promise to be classy and comfortable.’
