Chika Osaka sees her art as a declaration of love to the endearing ordinary people who face up to the banality and often boredom of their everyday lives. Working with visual, textual and aural elements, she produces artworks with humour and a love of detail that draw the viewer into the picture, regardless of his or her cultural background or national origin. Her prints reveal a profound understanding of the lithograph and the Japanese woodcut tradition, from which she proceeds in a very contemporary fashion.

In the Cabinet of the Museum Franz Gertsch, the young Japanese artist shows current paintings, watercolours and lithographs, some of which were made especially for this exhibition. This show, her first in Switzerland, will subsequently be seen at the Micheko Galerie in Munich (D).

Chika Osaka was born in 1984 Tokyo (J), where she studied painting and printmaking at the University of the Arts and where she now lives and works. She has been regularly been exhibiting internationally since 2009 and has received numerous prizes for her prints in particular since 2008, most recently the 2019 Jerwood Printmaking Today Prize awarded by the Jerwood Foundation, London (GB). She is one of Japan’s most popular young artists.
