Working in the studio starting with nothing but paint and impulse, Welsh artist Elfyn Lewis RCA goes on a journey with each and every work of art he creates.

As part of a new joint exhibition on until May 22, at leading North Wales Art Gallery Ffin y Parc, this will be Elfyn’s biggest show to date, in both numbers of works and their size. The show of over 50 new pieces coincides with Elfyn’s 50th Birthday and also runs alongside new collections by highly collectable Welsh landscape artist Martin Llewellyn and still-life painter Kim Dewsbury.

Elfyn Lewis RCA was born and brought up in Porthmadog and now lives and works in Cardiff. His work appears in many public and private collections, including a recent purchase by the National Library of Wales. Of his work the artist explained: “My work is a combination of works on paper and mdf and although the work is abstract I believe it has a definite feel of landscape.

“Hopefully people will enjoy the vibrant colours and get a feel for something they haven’t seen before. Ffin y Parc has a knack of bringing the best out of my work.” Gallery Owner Ralph Sanders added: “Elfyn retrieves glimpses, fragments and impressions of the world in abstract form. He lets the paint dictate shape and scale of his pieces and we are delighted to help celebrate his birthday with this exhibition.”

Also exhibiting a new collection of work from Sunday, April 28 until Wednesday, May 22 at the Galley is popular Welsh landscape artist Martin Llewellyn. His subjects are the familiar land and seascapes of North Wales and the Gower peninsula. The self-taught artist has only been painting full-time since 2012 but has quickly established himself with successful shows throughout Wales and London. “His instinctive and straightforward empathy for the landscape gives his work considerable resonance,” added Ralph. “His previous show with us was a near sell-out and we are pleased to have his new collection.” For her new show, Kim Dewsbury has once again combined elements of still-life and landscape. “Kim’s clarity is forensic and fascinating,” explained Ralph.

“Nothing here is random or unnecessary. She assembles the objects in each painting, each bring its own particular set of ideas and connections.” Kim was born in Cornwall and studied at the Falmouth School of Art. She has been living and working in Wales for over 30 years.
