Galerie Gisela Clement is pleased to present the group exhibition TRIPLE with works by Janine van Oene, Riette Wanders and Stephen Westfall.

Riette Wanders (*1966 in Rhenen, NL) works on paper mark an ongoing search for elusive and contradictory images. Her charcoal drawings seem like musical notation – similar to the écriture automatique – structured with raw, energetic and at the same time fine lines.

The geometric works of Stephen Westfall (*1953 in Schenectady, New York) move in the field of tension between painting and architecture and negotiate in an innovative way influences of American abstract painting since the 1960s. At the same time, the tapestries shown in the exhibition can be seen as a re-evaluation of textile working techniques for the subject area and the expressive possibilities of painting.

The paintings of Janine van Oene (*1988, NL) are quite different. The artist constructs her paintings in such a way that the forms dock just as loosely to figuration as they are left floating as basic forms. The contradiction works because she balances the statics of a picture with a sure eye. Thus the artist questions the relationship between abstraction and object again and again.

What all three artists have in common is the constant search for a system of forms and colors, which are continuously assembled into a new pictorial world. In this way, the individual picture universes become sign systems that question and re-evaluate the social context of their reception(s).

Jan van der Ploeg (*1959, Amsterdam, NL), curator of the exhibition, was a guest artist at the gallery in 2018 (exhibition OVLOV with Martin Pfeifle). At the same time, gkg in Bonn presented a large mural painting by Ploeg specially designed for its rooms.
