3AM Rococo is an exhibition of realistically rendered op art paintings by Alex Garant.
Exploring darker tones and playing with patterns and textures, Alex Garant has created portraits in which the faces and eyes of her subjects seem to skip their registers through image redoubling and superimposition.
Alex Garant has long been fascinated by the interaction of patterns and symmetry and the resulting optics of their graphic repetition and layering. Her portraits begin with a series of superimposed drawings, pushing the familiar confines of portraiture. The compelling process of attempting to stabilise the image produces a fundamental feeling of perceptual instability. This series introduces more ornamental and theatrical elements that intensify storytelling possibilities.
Internationally renowned as the Queen of Double Eyes, Alex Garant studied visual arts at Notre-Dame-De-Foy College, just outside Quebec City, Canada. After graduating in 2001, she ultimately settled in Toronto.
She decided to commit to her passion for art after suffering a heart attack in 2012, changing forever how she would see the world. She is a pioneer of contemporary figurative op art. Her oil paintings offer a graphic quality combined with traditional portrait techniques. Garant has established herself as one of the leaders of analog glitch art by using patterns, duplication of elements, symmetry and image superposition as key elements of her imagery.
Garant has shown works in galleries all over Canada and the United States as well as Australia and Portugal. Her works have also been seen in magazines such as Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz and Beautiful Bizarre and on multiple online platforms, including VICE, The Huffington Post and Buzznet.
Complimentary wine will be available at the opening. For those wanting a non-alcoholic option, we will also have drinks provided by Remedy Kombucha.
