Lauren Skelly Bailey: Studio Focus, MAD presents ceramic works by 2017 artist-in-residence Lauren Skelly Bailey.
On view in the sixth-floor Project Space, Lauren Skelly Bailey: Studio Focus is the fifth installation of the MAD Education Department’s Focus series. Dedicated to highlighting the work of alumni of MAD’s Artist Studios program, Fellow Focus and Studio Focus exhibitions invite these emerging artists to showcase work they refined while in residence at the Museum.
The largest show to date of Bailey’s ceramics, Lauren Skelly Bailey: Studio Focus incorporates assemblage sculptures, photography, conglomerations, and a site-specific installation, all featuring the artist’s distinctive layering, glazing, and reuse of ceramic materials. Bailey’s paradoxically subtle and vibrantly colored works often reference the natural world, especially critically endangered coral environments, in which certain corals change to near-neon hues before being bleached due to the ravages of global warming.
Lauren Skelly Bailey: Studio Focus is curated by MAD’s Manager of Public Programs Lydia Brawner with support from Coordinator of Public Programs Marissa Passi.
