Set across two floors, the exhibition will trace Hughes' lifelong exploration of perspective and visual paradox. Confounding viewers for more than fifty years, his three-dimensional paintings appear to move with the viewer, creating a false perspective by cleverly presenting those parts of the picture that seem farthest away at the nearest point. At first glance the paintings appear two-dimensional, but in Hughes' own words, 'They come to life when we bring them to life.' This truly unique surrealist art-form takes the viewer on a colourful journey down gallery corridors, around graffitied street corners and along dazzling Venetian canals.

The ground floor gallery with feature a selection of iconic original paintings from Hughes' oeuvre, including Appropriately, 2018 and Poppyish, 2018. The upstairs space will showcase a selection of smaller multiples and mixed media artworks, such as Banksy, 2018 and Piccolo, 2018.

Patrick Hughes lives and works in London. One of the major painters of contemporary British art, his works are in many public collections including the British Library, the Tate Gallery and The British Academy, London; the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; The Deutsche Bibliothek, Frankfurt and the Denver Art Museum. Hughes has exhibited in London and throughout Europe, South East Asia, America and Canada.

Publications by Patrick Hughes include Vicious Circles and Infinity; Upon the Pun; More on Oxymoron; Left to Write and Paradoxymoron: Foolish Wisdom in Words and Pictures. The work of the artist has featured in the monograph Perverspective, by John Slyce and most recently in A Newer Perspective, second edition published in 2018 by Flowers Gallery, with articles by Dawn Ades, Martin Kemp, Thomas Papathomas and Patrick Hughes.

Patrick Hughes: A New Look at Perspective will be on display at Alon Zakaim Fine Art, 5-7 Dover St. London W1S 4LD from 4 February - 29 March 2019. Gallery opening hours are 9am-6pm, Monday-Friday.
