Christopher Thomas, born in Munich in 1961, graduated from the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie (Bavarian State Teaching Institute for Photography), and now works internationally as a renowned advertising photographer. His photojournalism for Geo, Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, Merian, and magazines has received many international prizes.
He became known as an artist with his extensive cycle Münchner Elegien (Munich Elegies), which was shown at the Fotomuseum München in 2005 and published that year by Schirmer/Mosel. New York Sleeps is another series of Polaroid photographs produced shortly thereafter. These works have been exhibited at the Bernheimer Fine Art Photography in Munich as well as at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York, Fifty One Fine Art Photography in Antwerp, and the Wapping Project, London. The associated publication, New York Sleeps: Photographs by Christopher Thomas, was published in 2009 by Prestel (3rd printing in 2011) and shortly thereafter received the Deutscher Fotobuchpreis. The photographs in Christopher Thomas’s Passion were taken in Oberammergau in 2010, during the rehearsals for the passion play there. In 2011 his Passion cycle received the highest award (silver) in the photography category from the Art Director Club Deutschland. An extensive selection from this cycle was on show in the grand church hall of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum from October 2011 through April 2012.
The publication Christopher Thomas: Passion; Photographien der Passionsspiele Oberammergau 2010 is available from Prestel. In February 2012, his latest works have also been published in a book by Prestel: Christopher Thomas: Venice in Solitude. Christopher Thomas lives in Munich.
