Ciência Viva pays tribute to women scientists in Portugal, who represent 45% of all researchers in this country and whose outstanding work has been central to the national progress in science and in national technology recorded in the last decades.

This special thanks to the scientists culminated with the launch of the book Mulheres na Ciência [Women in Science] that does not exhaust the participation of Portuguese women in science, but aims to be a showcase of their involvement in the adventure of knowledge. The book brings together over one hundred portraits of Portuguese researchers taken by photographers António Pedro Ferreira, Clara Azevedo, Daniel Rocha, José Carlos Nascimento and Luísa Ferreira, by invitation of Ciência Viva.

The content also exists in digital form on a permanent exhibit in the Pavilion of knowledge. In this module, visitors have the opportunity to meet the researchers who enjoy the thrill of discovery. In the coming months, this digital gallery will continue to welcome new faces and testimonies of female research.

"This book does not exhaust the participation of Portuguese women who do science, but aims to be a showcase of their involvement in the adventure of knowledge. We invited researchers emeritus, senior scientists and young scientists at the beginning of their career and tried to address the widest possible range of areas of knowledge and geographies", said Rosalia Vargas, President of Ciência Viva.

From Biology to Mathematics, from Chemistry to Social Sciences, from Physics to Archaeology, from Neuroscience to Geography, from Engineering to History, from Space Science to Philosophy, Mulheres na Ciência focuses on 137 researchers. 137 success stories that have greatly contributed to the rooting of science in Portuguese society and Ciência Viva hopes to inspire young people to follow their vocation.
