Sanctuary Artists present the exploration of the cultural, political, social and environmental differences and commonalities that construct the concept of Sanctuary from the perspective of ‘Home, Away and Common Ground’. This mixed media International, Collaborative Exhibition at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London, is Sanctuary Artists first in the U.K., curated by Annabelle Hulbert, the exhibition includes eight artists, from Kenya, Algeria and the UK.

Participating artists are: Patrick Altes , Algeria; Madi Acharya-Baskerville, U.K.; Lindsay Duncanson, U.K.; Annabelle Hulbert, U.K. ; James Mbuthia, Kenya; Kamal Shah, Kenya; Prina Shah, Kenya and Michael Taylor, U.K.

Following Sanctuary Artists launch exhibition at The National Museum of Kenya Nairobi in 2010, the artists have developed their engagement on a personal level with the term ‘Sanctuary’, and through their engagement, demonstrate commonalities and differences that exists within any cultural diverse space.

The audience will be encouraged to interact with the work that the artists present within the gallery, and through so doing, continue the dialogue of what Sanctuary means to different peoples. The motivation for the exhibition is to create a platform to highlight and bring awareness to what Sanctuary means to disabled children and their families based in Nyeri Kenya that attend The Metropolitan Sanctuary For Sick Children.

In the light of this actual Sanctuary and the shifting perspectives that the artists visualise through their varied art forms, it is hoped that the viewer will be conscious, that whilst Sanctuary is a universal concept, the living in it can be less sure and shifting.
