A landscape is something that we can observe and something with which we interact. Without attributes, it is just an abstract concept. Words can be added before or after it to change its meaning. It can be a landscape of the soul or the mind. It can be a cultural or political landscape. It can be a specific place or a landscape tied to a period. It does not mean anything, but at the same time it means everything.

There are several synonyms for landscape in the English language, including scenery and view. Landscape can, then, be seen to mean viewing something from a certain angle. It always appears different depending on the direction of viewing. It is never objective, but always dependent on the viewer. It is like photography: only subjectively true. Like photography, a landscape can be seen to be an instrument of deceit and, especially, of power.

The eight photographic artists featured in the Finnish Landscape exhibition were selected through an open call in the spring of 2018. The curators of the exhibition and the exhibition book are members of the Photobooks from Finland group. Established in 2014, Photobooks from Finland is an association that promotes and archives Finnish photographic art books and publications.
