Castelli Gallery is pleased to present Keith Sonnier: Early Concepts / Recent Sculptures. The exhibition features a selection of drawings from the 60s and three recent sculptures.

Among the sculptures included in the show are Corrugated Twist, 2017 and Bua, 2009 from the Oldowan Series. These works incorporate tubes of neon in vibrant blue, green, pink, red and white. The tubes of neon trace dynamic lines that curve across space and connect the wall to the floor, creating an effect similar to that of a portal, a gateway into the wall. At the same time, they intersect with elements in corrugated steel, satin, and rough stone, producing a collision of visceral effects.

The drawings in the exhibition date from 1966 and consist of annotations of ideas for works, some of which were never realized. Among other concerns, they reveal the artist’s continued exploration in a form of sculpture that interacts with both the wall and the floor. The linear shapes mapped out in these early drawings acquire an architectural value as they define and illuminate space through these recent sculptures.

Keith Sonnier’s first exhibition at Castelli Gallery dates back to 1970, when the artist presented his work at the Castelli Warehouse. This upcoming summer, the Parrish Art Museum will present Keith Sonnier: Until Today, the first major survey of the artist’s work in an American museum. In July, the Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton will install Dis-Play II, from 1970, with Sonnier’s film and video work from 1968-1977.
