The Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present Crazy Cats, an exhibition of recent paintings by Richard Bosman. This will be his fifth exhibition with the gallery. The show will be up from March 31 to May 12. An opening reception for the artist will be held Saturday, March 31 from 3-6 pm.
Richard Bosman commenting about this recent body of work: “Last summer an abandoned cat started hanging around my house which I fed sporadically. After 3 months or so I let it into my house. It immediately went upstairs into a spare room and had a single kitten. I used this image of the mother and daughter as the basis for these paintings, which is classic painting theme.
Once I had the image I didn’t have to think of it anymore and could concentrate on different processes that seemed to change the emotional impact. I made a stencil of the two cats, which I transferred to the canvases and then painted them in as many different ways as possible. Somewhat like variations one can get in printmaking.
I used traditional and non-traditional materials and tools. Oil paint, spray paint, caulking compound, thread, oil based house paint, oil sticks, Bounty paper towels, rags, various trowels, brushes etc. It was liberating to be open to the possibilities without any preconceived notions of the end result and without style being the determining factor.
The two cats are now domesticated and a large presence in my life.”
Richard Bosman lives and works in Esopus, New York. His work is in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum.
