Von Lintel Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by French artist, Sebastien Leon. The exhibition marks the artist’s first solo presentation with the gallery.
Sebastien Leon’s paintings are an extension of his practice as a sculptor and sound artist. The departure point for each painting is a three dimensional sculptural rendering projected onto a wood panel. The lines of the sculptural rendering serve as a geometric guide that he uses to apply strips of tape to guard off negative space before the painting process begins. He meticulously builds up an abstracted pseudo-landscape through layers of acrylic painting, all the while preserving the minimal scaffold of his three-dimensional rendering.
Sebastien Leon’s paintings bring to life ethereal physical environments that are at once tangible yet entirely abstract. His compositions map imagined spaces that seemingly stretch far beyond the borders of each piece. Geometric figures commingle with dripping paint and splashes of bright colors, resulting in a unique visual quality that is both meticulous and deliberate, but also uninhibited and spontaneous.
Sebastien Leon was born in Blois, France in 1973. He has exhibited sculpture and sound installations in Europe and the U.S. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
