From March 25th to May 6th 2018, the Galerie Municipale Jean-Collet will be delighted to present the exclusive exhibition 1971-2018/ 186 feuilles gathering a selection of works from the Graphic and Photographic Fund that the city has enriched with about 400 pieces from the 1970s up until today.
The City of Vitry-sur-Seine started building a collection of drawings over four decades ago, in the 1970s, when the idea emerged to open a museum of contemporary drawing. Some acquisitions were made and many artists who were jury members of the “Novembre à Vitry” painting prize (Adami, Messagier, Calder, Segui, Marta Pan, Hugh Weis etc.) donated works to help launch the project. Although this pioneer project never came through, the collection kept growing and opened up to photography (Sabine Weiss, Claude Dityvon, Paul Pouvreau, Tania Mouraud, Michèle Waquant etc.) The collection has been kept at the MAC VAL since its opening in 2006.
This collection of about 400 pieces does not result from a scienti c project but has nevertheless a story to tell: that of the fruitful relationships the city has been developing with artists for years, and especially its special relationship with public commission, since the city has been committed to this process for decades, with now 140 artworks scattered all over town. It is also that, of course, of the relationships with the exhibitions held at the Galerie Municipale Jean-Collet and the rst collection of the MAC VAL, the Fonds départemental d’art contemporain (FDAC) of the Val-de- Marne, since many are the artists featured in both collections.
Artworks come to life only when they see the light. The goal of this exhibition is to give the audience the most comprehensive overview of a collection kept too con dential until today. The artworks selection based on artistic connections and thematic echoes was made in collaboration with artist Gilgian Gelzer and Laure Flacelière, in charge of the MAC VAL collection. The exhibition is a partner of Drawing Now Art Fair 2018.
