An exhibition of 17th and 18th Century paintings under £ 40,000.

This exhibition will prove that it is possible to find high quality paintings for a reasonable price. The paintings are over 250 years old with an interesting history and painted with great skill and attention to detail. These works of art are not just dark and dull but carefully created and thought out masterworks by artists of great talent whose names would not necessarily be widely recognised.

Highlights include a painting by Herman van Swanevelt, long thought to be the only pupil of Claude, given by a friend to Sir Peter Lely, the famous 17th Century portraitist. On the reverse is the original label documenting the gift. Apart from giving us a fascinating insight into the history of the painting it is incredibly rare to find such a label still intact on a painting that is 360 years old.

Rafael Valls Limited is a St. James’s art gallery mainly dealing in Old Master Paintings with specialist areas in Dutch, Flemish and Spanish paintings. Owned and run by Rafael Valls and his wife Caroline. It has traded for over thirty years and the gallery carries an eclectic and varied stock. The gallery has gained an enviable reputation for trompe l’oeil paintings and for the small exhibitions it holds once a year around Old Master Paintings Week.

The gallery exhibits every year at The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, which is now regarded as the finest art and antiques fair anywhere in the world.

Gerard Van Honthorst, Utrecht 1592 - 1656, Dutch School. A Portrait, Half-Length, of a Gentleman, believed to be Sir Thomas Ogle, wearing a Suit of Armour, a White Collar and an Orange Sash, Oil on Panel, 29 1 /8 x 23 3/8 inches (74 x 60 cms), Signed and Dated " G. Honthorst / 1644", Provenance: Collection of Richard Ratcliffe, Manor House, Waddington, Lincoln. Note: Inscribed au verso in a contemporary 17th Century hand: " Sr. Tomas Oghel Maijsior". Sir Thomas Ogle was, by all accounts, quite a character. There is little information on him, presumably due to his family's attempts to cover up the scandals. He was probably the son of Thomas Ogle and Elizabeth Berkley.

According to Jacob Simon, Mr Flecher would almost certainly be referring to Tobias Flessier (1610 - 85) or Flusheer or Flushire with whom Lely shared his house in Covent Garden between 1651 and 1657, before he took it over himself in 1662

Henri-Pierre Danloux, Paris 1753 - 1809, French School, A Portrait of a Young Boy, traditionally identified as Master Hugh Grant, Bust length, wearing a white Chemise, Oil on Canvas, 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches (26.5 x 21.5 cms), Provenance: Private Collection, UK, Note: This unfinished portrait is unusual for Danloux but certainly not unique. A portrait of Marie De Lisle (sale, Tajan, 1999) shows the same technique and preparation of the canvas as our small painting
