Including Neo Rauch, Georg Baselitz, Dana Schutz, Adrian Ghenie, Ben Quilty, Mernet Larsen and others, the artists in this exhibition combine sharp social observation with dark and absurdist humour.

They also share a vigorous and exploratory approach to the process of creating human images through a traditional medium, seeking to discover through paint ‘something living, something that changes each day’ – in the words of Philip Guston, whose work is also on display.

With subjects including sex, food, family life, combat and the self, these artists all argue distinctively for painting’s ability to come to grips with contemporary life.
