The paintings of Raimonds Staprans showcase the landscape and architecture of California and have an equal basis in reality and the artist’s imagination. Taut contours and bold hues define fields, marinas, isolated trees, and architecture (all devoid of people). His still-life paintings of fruit, artist’s materials, and chairs share a pervasive loneliness, quality of light, and rich color. While his style is deeply personal, his depth of experience in the Golden State has resulted in work that is on par with his Bay Area contemporaries such as Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud, and David Park.
