Sicardi Gallery is pleased to present Clarissa Tossin: Study for a Landscape. In this solo exhibition of recent work, Tossin explores ideas about landscape, urban space, and the body. The artist will be present at an opening reception on Thursday, May 16 from 6 to 8 pm.

In Study for a Landscape, Tossin exhibits three series of work, each of which bears some relationship to Brasília, the capital city of Brazil designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lucia Costa in the 1950s. In these works, Tossin explores the manmade phenomena of landscape and compares the scale of the body to the scale of the city as maps and photographs represent it. What she discovers is that each site—even sites seemingly constructed on a tabula rasa-have their own histories embedded within their geography. They also have patterns of use that are often unpredictable and particular. In these works, each linked by the artist’s indexical processes, Tossin intertwines the modernist grid with the imperfections of the body and the experiences of everyday life.

Born in Brasília, Tossin studied at Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado in São Paulo and at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. In 2012, she completed a two-year residency in the Core Program at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Tossin has been selected by curator Hou Hanru to be an International Artist-in-Residence at ArtPace San Antonio from May to July 2013. Her work is included in the collection of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
