Fisher Parrish Gallery is thrilled to present "Familiars", a two-person exhibition of works by Los Angeles painter Aaron Elvis Jupin, and Rhode Island-based sculptor Zach Martin.
Zach Martin, also known as Interior Theatre, creates furniture-esque sculptures that are both humorous and eerily human, evoking surrealist figures crossed with caricatures of chairs, tables and lamps. His cast of starkly-colored objects are curved, bulbous and arching, suspended in alternating positions of flexing and repose—perverse biomorphic sculptures that have a physical presence that is uncannily familiar, while at the same time unsettling and alien. Martin’s practice articulates the liminal areas—the space between states of existence, art and commodity, object and user, and between familiarity and abstraction.
Aaron Elvis Jupin paints bright, hypnotic scenes of interiors and semi-animate objects using the traditional cartoon animator’s medium of airbrush and cell vinyl. Growing up in the shadow of Disneyland, his childhood and subconscious were fundamentally molded by Walt Disney imagery. The works in "Familiars" use the ambiguous familiarity of cartoon motifs, which seem cheerful and innocuous on their own, but in concert seem to allude to an unseen, vaguely sinister subject just out of frame.
Fundamental to each artist’s work is a fascination with interiors and object-characters, often with the implication that such objects are frozen in motion and endowed with some level of consciousness. Together, Jupin’s paintings are the scenery for an intimate performance between Martin’s sculptures and the viewer. Familiars will run from September 8th to October 29th, 2017, with an opening on September 8th from 7-10pm.
