Other Side: Art, Object, Self examines the ways in which artists use materials—paint, glass, marble, fabric, found objects, and even their own bodies—to explore a critical examination of national, cultural, and self-identity.
Through the artist’s craft, and through the focus offered by the museum space, a spool of thread resonates with feelings of connectivity; a model train carries the weight of a broken Constitution; embellished black lawn jockeys become proxies for Yoruba gods.
Featuring artwork from the Tang collection, this exhibition brings together the work of contemporary artists including Willie Cole, Jamal Cyrus, Kate Ericson and Mel Ziegler, Tim Hawkinson, Michael Joo, Zanele Muholi, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Yinka Shonibare, Lorna Simpson, and others.
