The collection of Roman art embraces the chronological period from the Republic (1st century B.C.) until the late Empire (4th century B.C.). It includes sculptures, reliefs, marble sarcophagi, altars, mosaics and art crafts.
The most important place in the Hermitage collection is occupied by Roman sculptural portraits. Among the masterpieces are the portrait of Emperor Lucius Verus (2nd century B.C.), the portrait of a young woman, known as a Syrian Woman (2nd century B.C.) and two monuments of art of the 3rd century: the portraits of Emperors Balbinus and Philip the Arab.
