Coagula Curatorial is pleased to present In The Shadows, an exhibit of new quilted paintings and glass sculptural works by Lavialle Campbell. The exhibit runs from Saturday, May 27 thru Sunday, July 2 at Coagula Curatorial, located at 974 Chung King Road, in historic Chinatown.
Apprehensive to painting in the traditional sense, Lavialle Campbell approaches geometric abstraction through the use of quilted thread and cotton, rejecting western-based art-making materials, and aligning her self with processes historically associated with “women's work”, all the while challenging the very idea of what a painting can be. Through this approach, Campbell's works attain a certain zen – her formal interests in Modernism, Japanese Minimalism, and contemporary architecture working simultaneously in support of her non-representational quilted abstractions.
In The Shadows is a new body of works that address the dark and shadowy spaces that are endured within a lifetime of illness, while at the same time discovering the resilience and potential for beauty within those shadows.
