Geary Contemporary is pleased to open this March with Sleight of Hand, a solo exhibition of recent work by Los Angeles based artist Christopher Kuhn. The gallery will be hosting an opening reception for the artist on Friday, March 24th from 6-8 pm. This will be Kuhn’s first solo exhibition with the gallery.

In Kuhn’s paintings, gestural marks move from positive to negative and back, achieving a balance between conscious decision making and the chaos of the impulsive mark. Quick, fluid drips and stains initiate a call and response with more technical, controlled brushwork. Marks that might represent the earliest beginnings of a piece appear as though they were finishing touches, laid on toward the end.

Kuhn’s paintings explore a space beyond the familiar, where his handling of color and pattern works to flatten the picture plane. With digital influence taken from screens and tablets, glitches and pixels, paint becomes surface noise, with shapes and marks that appear to vibrate on the wall.

Christopher Kuhn (b.1977, Chicago, USA) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. In 2007, Kuhn was also an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont, USA. Kuhn pursued graduate studies in painting at University of Tennessee Knoxville, USA and holds a Post-Bac Certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, USA (2007) as well as a B.A. Art History from the American University of Paris, France (1999).
