Edward Cella Art & Architecture is proud to present Something Real, a group exhibition including paintings by Sara Carter, Anthony B. Creeden, Brian Hollister, and Chris Trueman.

The title of the exhibition refers to the exploration of the tragic and the sublime with the works in the gallery serving as a testament to the deep humanism each artist brings to contemporary abstract painting. Sara Carter’s expressive brush strokes and flooded color fields articulate a state of mind beyond ordinary reality, resulting in autobiographical paintings that are poetic and mystical. Anthony B. Creeden’s playful, and translucent egg tempera paintings are informed by his fascination with traditional painting materials and imbuing the making process with a personally meaningful narrative. Brian Hollister’s paintings are based on direct and intimate observations of the landscape, transforming the familiar with expressive, and rhythmic lines and fields of color. Chris Trueman’s layered paintings converge with the aesthetic of digital and photographic imagery with decidedly hand-made gestures that are both sprayed-on and applied with a brush and squeegee, creating a visual field that reverses the norm of gestural painting.

Sara Carter studied at the University of Texas, Austin and received her BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and has had multiple solo exhibitions at Graystone Gallery, San Francisco, CA. Group exhibitions include Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey,CA; Scope Art Fair, Miami, FL; Art Fair, Cologne Germany; Art Southampton, Southampton, NY; Scope Art Fair, Basel, Switzerland; Pulse Art Fair, New York, NY. Her works are in multiple private and corporate collections.

Anthony B. Creeden received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MFA from University of Texas, Austin. He has exhibited at Mass Gallery, Austin; TX, William Benington Gallery, London, UK; Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, IL; Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI; MacLean Center, Chicago, IL; and Sullivan Galleries, Chicago, IL. His works has been published in New American Paintings, Timeout Chicago, and Chicago Art Magazine.

Brian Hollister received a BA, MA, and MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles under such artists as Richard Diebenkorn, Charles Garabedian, and Lee Mullican. He has exhibited at Edward Cella Art & Architecture, Los Angeles, CA; Design Lab, West Hollywood, CA; Chiaroscuro Cont. Art, Santa Fe, NM; Carl Berg Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, and Bachofner Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. His work has been published in the Los Angeles Times and is held in many private and corporate collections.

Chris Trueman received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He has had solo exhibitions at Edward Cella Art & Architecture, Los Angeles, CA; White Box Contemporary, San Diego, CA; Adah Rose Gallery, Kensington, MD; and Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA.
