Christopher Grimes Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of early works by Allan Sekula. The exhibition will open on January 14 at 6 pm with a panel discussion between Jill Dawsey, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Philipp Kaiser, independent curator, and Glenn Phillips, Curator and Head of Modern & Contemporary Collections at the Getty Research Institute. In addition to the panel discussion we will launch the second edition of Photography Against the Grain: Essays and Photoworks 1973-1983, a seminal collection of early essays and photographs by Sekula that has been out of print for nearly three decades.

Sekula’s exhibition will include unique, preliminary versions of his established works such as This Ain’t China (unique maquette), (1974), comprised of almost 90 contact sheet prints depicting the class struggle of kitchen workers (including the artist himself), and School is a Factory, consisting of selected prints that have never been exhibited. Also on view will be Meditations on a Triptych, as well as Long Beach Notes and the single-channel video Reagan Tape, among other works.
