León Tovar Gallery is proud to present Gravitas, a selection of historical and contemporary works will reveal the artist's’ ongoing fascination with the notions of gravity, weightlessness and tension.

The show opens Thursday November 3rd, 2016 at Leon Tovar Gallery located at 152 West 25th Street, 3rd Floor from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm.

Gravitas, Latin for weight or heaviness, acts as an ineluctable force, which affects all objects. The exhibition investigates the relationship between the resistance and resignation from and towards the force of gravity through materials such as wood, wire, fiber and metal. Through mobiles, sculptures and installations, the exhibition will present, Carmelo Arden Quin, Waltercio Caldas, Harry Bertoia, Leon Ferrari, Jesús Rafael Soto, Derick Pobell, Olga de Amaral, Julio le Parc and Ernesto Neto.

Gravitas invites the viewer to immerse and engage Pobell’s and Arden Quin’s mobiles, compels the spectator to view the pieces by moving around them, appreciating their every angle and detail. The mobiles reject the force of gravity and instead challenge it, hanging by the ceiling yet attempting to float. Soto’s Cubo y Extensión, 1971 recently exhibited in El Museo del Barrio’s Illusive Eye Exhibition, an optical installation piece, challenge the viewers’ perception of depth. Caldas’ installation A Tale, 2013 as its name suggests, tells a story though three separate yet collective scenarios, he accentuates the natural law of gravity where as Amaral’s painted linen Nudo, 2002 and Ferrari’s stainless steel sculpture surrender to gravity.
