During the 19th century it was the seat of the Madras Presidency, one of the four divisions of British Imperial India. The older section of the city is west of the dock area and north of Poonamallee High Road. In these narrow streets and bazaars are the offices of shipping and forwarding agents, the bulk of the cheaper hotels and cafes as well as the GPO.
