Tommaso Corvi-Mora is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by American artist Jennifer Packer.
Jennifer Packer is dedicated to an exploration based in observation. There is a yearning for verisimilitude in lieu of realism in the artist's portraits, interiors and still life paintings, even as many works are rooted in memory. Packer’s desire to both project and protect the sitter’s subjectivity is paramount in the figurative works. The portraits from life are executed in the sitter’s home or studio, as a commitment to a genuine exchange. The portraits are a record of care, a testament to the irrefutability of the body and individual identity. Packer is also interested in the latitude of color as it pertains to visibility, matter and climate. There is a concern about both the “undeniability” and elusiveness of color in particular, and its relationship to the bodies depicted. “I think about images that resist, that attempt to retain their secrets or maintain their composure, that put you to work,” Packer explains. “I hope to make works that suggest how dynamic and complex our lives and relationships really are.
