The Scottish Gallery are delighted to be displaying a collection of works by David McClure, selected by his son and former Gallery Director, Robin McClure.
David McClure’s last exhibition ‘The Art of Picture Making’ at The Scottish Gallery was a great success and highlighted McClure’s compelling curiosity of the world around him. This exhibition aims to continue that discussion with works analysing, people, places, nature and ideas which excited and captured his imagination.
The majority of works which will be exhibited come from the time of his Andrew Grant Fellowship from Edinburgh College of Art from 1955 to 1957.
David McClure is from a group of highly regarded painters that included James Cumming, William Baillie, John Houston, Elizabeth Blackadder and David Michie all of whom graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in the early 1950s.
We can see McClure today, fifteen years or so after his passing, as a distinctive figure who made a vital contribution in the mainstream of Scottish painting, and as an individual with great gifts, intellect and curiosity.
