Portraits of Her Majesty The Queen, HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will form part of a new exhibition by photographer Hugo Rittson Thomas at Eleven, London SW1, running 19 August – 19 September 2015.
Entitled The Queen's People, the exhibition shows photographs of Members of the Royal Household and support staff in their traditional uniforms.
Inspired by formal 17th century portrait painting, in which a black background would emphasise the craftsmanship and colour of ceremonial dress, the photographs use a unique, contemporary mirroring device to show each individual from all four sides (front, back and both profiles).
For this project, Rittson Thomas has chosen to highlight some of the rich history of ceremonial roles in the Royal Household, ranging from members of The Royal Company of Archers and The Company of Pikemen & Musketeers to The Royal Bargemaster and The Queen’s Piper. He has also photographed others with Royal Appointments, including members of the clergy and parliament.
Speaking about the exhibition, Hugo Rittson Thomas said: "It was a privilege to photograph Her Majesty and other Members of the Royal Family and to blend the history and traditions of Royal life with a modern photographic style. I hope people will enjoy seeing these photographs as much as I enjoyed making them."
The photograph of Her Majesty was taken to mark The Queen's Colonelcy of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards whose 60th Anniversary was celebrated in 2013.
