Transformations opening at Lacey Contemporary Gallery this May 13 2015, is an exhibition of contemporary paintings, sculpture and bark from living artists in the remote Aboriginal communities of Central, Western, and Northern Australia. The exhibition explores the transformation of traditional Aboriginal art, a culture that is 60,000 years old and is identified by ceremonial paintings of bodies and objects, the making of maps in the sand, and cave paintings – to today’s contemporary aboriginal artists. The work from these artists, still living in remote communities of Australia, is contemporary as it is ancient. They use vibrant colour, as well as traditional Earth ochres, drawing their inspiration from their traditions, stories and the harsh landscape of their homes.

The exhibition will feature a diverse range of contemporary art including a rare piece by renowned Kimberley Region Artist, Freddie Timms , Sculptures from Telstra Award winning artist Nawurapu Wununmurra from the Arnem Land, and new never-before-seen paintings from Lily Hargraves – who is featured in such collections as the National Gallery of Victoria and the Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal Art, Netherlands.
