Three new collaborations marked this year’s season for Medusa: the emerging artists Elli Koutsoukelli and Costas Tsiknis and the mature painting of Yannis Kontaratos. Their presence and their work added a new prospect for Medusa at this difficult juncture. With faith in its existing associates and trust in the new collaborations, Medusa Art Gallery contemplates the artistic horizon with optimism and wishes everyone a happy spring.

Thus on Thursday, May 7 at 8.00 in the evening Maria Demetriades will have the pleasure of presenting the work of her new associate, Costas Tsiknis.

A neo-pop narrative characterises the art of Costas Tsiknis, as Ap. Artinos writes: “Entries that exhaust —and are exhausted at— the surface of their image. Painterly gestures that occupy the space and demarcate their spots. What is deposited on the painted surfaces of Tsiknis is the repetitiveness of the moments as they are brought together in the hologrammatic allure of a magical image. The fluorescent colours, the black light that supports them and a decorative aesthetic make up an imagery that lies beyond painting and, ultimately, beyond the image.”

Olga Papacosta writes in a text on the artist: “The works of Costas Tsiknis point to a pagan world in which the distinction between living and inanimate does not exist. The miniscule, repetitive forms on the frame are no less live than the figures inside the box. There is life in the microcosm and the microcosm alike; in both the invisible and the visible. The artist stands at the border between the two worlds as an intermediary, mediator, a medium”.

Costas Tsiknis was born in 1961 in Amfissa, where he lives and works. A self-taught artist, he has been practising painting since 1999.
