Alessandra Bonomo Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Harry Adams’ new exhibition.
Harry Adams is the name of the artistic partnership between Steven Lowe and Adam Wood. Steven Lowe and Adam Wood met in art school in 1988 and have since collaborated on different artistic projects ranging from music to photography and painting. It was only in 2008 that they decided to work under the name of Harry Adams.
In this exhibition the artists have reinterpreted historical paintings and buildings such as Brueghel’s Tower of Babel and Saint Peter’s seminary in Scotland.
During their days spent in Rome the artists have been inspired by Livia’s Garden, the trompe l’oeil mural painting found in a villa built in the late 1st Century BC for Emperor Augustus’ wife Livia.
In the same way that the original mural painting was designed to connect the inside of Livia's villa with the outside garden, Harry Adams’ display of paintings in the gallery establishes a locus amoenous in which to transpose their reflections on history and connect the past and present.
The works displayed in the show have been made using the technique of encaustic painting traditionally used on walls, but in this case deployed on canvas with a mixture of wax and paint.
Adam Wood was born in 1965 in East London. Steve Lowe was born in 1966 in Slough (Berkshire). They attended the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. They live and work in London and Hastings(UK).
