Jonathan Cooper Park Walk Gallery is pleased to present Nurse, an exhibition of oil paintings by Craig Wylie. In these works Craig playfully engages with the art of the past, while placing his still lifes firmly in the modern idiom.
Chosen for their rich colour and subtle detail, the organic object is his focus here. Isolating them on an abstract colour field, he achieves a delicate balance between the traditional and the contemporary. By removing the natural object from its familiar environment he introduces a subtle tension and sense of alienation. This is nevertheless softened by the knowing humour of his titles, referencing Rembrandt, Manet, and Courbet, and other great masters.
Craig Wylie is exhibited and collected internationally with recent exhibitions in the US, Germany, Hong Kong, France and Belgium. He has won numerous awards including Ist Prize in the prestigious BP Portrait Award, as well as the London Region Prize at the Hunting Prize held at the Royal College of Art, London. He has work in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery and that of the Neuer Kunstverein, Aschaffenburg, Germany.
