From 29 June to 1 September 2012 the Arte Boccanera gallery will be presenting a show titled "Coney Island 1903", curated by Fabio Bartolini. The show will be an evocative array of pleasure, just like a real funfair.
Outside and inside the gallery there will be recreated an architectural setting inspired by the very first amusement park of all. The reference point of this alienating installation is Coney Island's Luna Park, active since 1903 and the grandfather of all the amusement parks that have adopted its name and main attractions.
The works on show, some of which were specially created for it, will be an integral part of this setting. Besides pieces by the gallery's artists, such as
Despotović, Festi, Miorandi, Schiavarelli, and Verginer, there will also be some exceptional works specifically created for the exhibition: for example, a panelpainting inspired by a 1925 project by Fortunato Depero for an advertising kiosk.
The show's aim is to open the new summer season by immersing the visitors in the dreamlike colours and atmosphere of a fairground. In this way the public can metaphorically take part in the "trip to the moon" that the founders of the Luna Park had invented for their visitors by constructing a spaceship that would carry them along a spectacular and unforgettable itinerary.
An installation that aims, in a panorama of excellent yet aseptic shows, to reclaim so many "happy improprieties".
