From 23rd September to 15th November 2014, Galerie des Galeries will be celebrating 25 years of ANDA M by inviting photographer Philippe Jarrigeon to exhibit his work. With “Grand Magasin” (“Department Store”, in French) he has created a series of images inspired by this place and people’s experiences of it.
Whether through still images, fanciful portraits of customers and staff, or facetious group pictures, he reinterprets 15 of the most iconic past laureates of ANDA M (National Association for the Development of the Fashion Arts), including Maison Martin Margiela, Christophe Lemaire, Véronique Leroy, Jean Touitou (APC ), Viktor & Rolf, Jeremy Scott, BLESS, Felipe Oliveira Baptista, Yazbukey, Gareth Pugh, Giles Deacon, Anthony Vaccarello, Yiqing Yin, Julien David and AMI – Alexandre Mattiussi. In this project, Philippe Jarrigeon recreates an ideal department store and illustrates 25 years of fashion history in a festive and unique setting.
Fully aware of the need to support young artists and designers, whose role is central to the fashion industry, Galeries Lafayette group has partnered with the prestigious ANDA M Fashion Award since 2003. This year, Galeries Lafayette have chosen to contribute to the ANDA M’s anniversary by hosting an exhibition at Galerie des Galeries.
Philippe Jarrigeon was born in France in 1982. He studied at the Cantonal Art School of Lausanne (ECAL), a prestigious academy at the intersection of multiple forms of art, which led him from industrial design to photography. In 2008, two years after graduation, he was selected by the International Festival of Fashion and Photography of Hyères.
Accustomed to working in very different contexts, from brand orders to exhibitions and the artistic direction of his magazine Dorade, revue galante, photographie et formes critiques, Philippe Jarrigeon surrounds himself with fashion designers, visual artists, graphic designers or architects in order to bring his projects to life.
His photography shows a great sense of color and décor. A prominent figure in contemporary photography, he has developed an iconography rooted in the history of art, focusing in particular on the devices and special effects used by surrealists, mixed with 1990s’ imagery. In his studio, he creates installations that bristle with objects, people, animals, materials and flashy colors. In his portraits, still lifes and fashion shoots, precise framing underscores the humor or irony of his perspective.
At just 30, Philippe Jarrigeon has produced multiple pictures which confirm his critical, unique vision of style and fashion.
On the year of his selection for the International Festival of Fashion and Photography of Hyères, in 2008, Philippe Jarrigeon also exhibited a series of pictures as part of the “Darkside 1” exhibition at the Fotomuseum in Winterthur (Switzerland).
Since then, he has worked both for fashion and luxury brands such as Chanel, Hermès, Kenzo or Roger Vivier as well as on his own exhibition projects. In 2012, together with the architectural firm Abinal & Ropars, he was commissioned by the Baccarat crystalworks to create the impressive décor and catalog of an exhibition entitled “L’Harcourt toujours, les 170 ans d’une icône”.
In 2009, together with Sylvain Menétrey (curator and journalist) he founded his own magazine: Dorade, revue galante, photographie et formes critiques (a chivalrous magazine of photography and critical forms), which quickly became a shared platform for avant-garde artists such as Camille Vivier, Theo Mercier, Brice Dellsperger, Nina Childress or Natacha Lesueur. In 2012, Dorade won the prestigious Swiss Design Award and the Award for best cultural magazine from the Art Directors’ Club.
Philippe Jarrigeon has been photography teacher at the Cantonal Art School of Lausanne since 2009. His photographs have been published in a variety of international newspapers and magazines, including Double, Frog, M Le Monde, the New York Times Magazine and the US edition of Vogue.
