An exhibition of performing material and structure directed by objects.
Cell Project Space invite Beatriz Olabarrieta to occupy the gallery for one month to develop a presentation of new sculpture and video. These works will be concerned with the artist’s ongoing research into the inherent potential of construction materials through undoing some of the roles and functions that have been imposed on them.
The guiding image for this deculturing approach is the action of tying and untying shoelaces. Separating laces can be viewed as a metaphor for the pulling apart of sense. This, in turn, opens up the possibility of generating a new language, perhaps closer to the intrinsic voice of the materials at hand.
The gallery transformed into studio will enable Olabarrieta to produce an interactive event space for the last weekend of the project, which will be developed in dialogue with writer and curator Ellen Mara De Wachter and her supporting text for the exhibition.
